1) In a sci-fi book called Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card (recently made into a movie) there are two kids fighting in a zero gravity environment. They are initially stationary but as the result of pushing each other Bonzo flies off at 1.5 m/s while Ender recoils at 2.5 m/s. Remember that momentum is a vector quantity. What direction is Ender moving relative to Bonzo? Which kid is heavier? What is the ratio of their masses (mB/mE)?
3) In the James Bond movie Diamonds Are Forever one of the characters is driven off the edge of an oil rig by the machine gun she is shooting the place up with. The mass of the bullet is 10 g and it's muzzle velocity is 720 m/s. If her mass is 51 kg what is her change in speed (from rest) due to the first bullet fired? What is her change in speed for the second bullet?
4) A golf ball (m=50 g) is fired at a stationary bowling ball (m = 7.3 kg) at 32 m/s and bounces straight back at 90% of its initial speed. In this collision of rigid objects which has the greater kinetic energy after the collision? Which ball has the greater momentum?
5) A 10 g bullet is fired straight up into a falling block of wood with a mass of 2.0 kg. The bullet is traveling 750 m/s when it hits, and embeds itself, in the block. As a result of the collision the block, which was dropped from the top of a building, reverses its direction and rises until it comes to a stop level with the top of the building. How long had the block been falling when it was hit by the bullet?
6) (2-d) A 10,000 kg truck enters an intersection heading due north at 45 km/hr. The driver of a 1000 kg compact car who seriously misunderstands the laws of physics tries to beat the truck across the intersection headed east at 90 km/hr. They collide inelastically (stuck together). What is the velocity of the car/truck imediately after the collision (magnitude and direction)?
7) Two 80 kg nuts from Total Fitness are standing on a 400 kg cart. Each nut can run at a maximum speed of 7.5 m/s relative to the cart. They are arguing about which of the following methods will make the cart go faster. 1) They both sprint along the cart and jump off simultaneously or 2) Each nut sprints down the cart and jumps off individually. How fact will the cart be going in each case and which method is makes the cart go faster.
8) Two steel balls are suspended on 25 cm cords from the ceiling so that they just touch. The balls have masses of 100 g and 200 g respectively. The 100 g ball is pulled back to an angle of 45o and released. What is the velocity of each ball immediately after the collision? Careful with the algebra!
