If we examine this problem carefully we can see that the same total current will flow from the battery if the set of resistors in parallel is replaced by a single 1.6 kΩ resistor. This leads to a simple expression for the equivalent resistance of any group of resistors in parallel shown in this slide from NASA. In the longer term you will learn a closed form expression for two resistors in parallel.
