Purpose:
This term I will ask you to move away from the relatively simple memo format that we used for labs last term. For this term we will use a LaTeX format which is more consistent with published science papers. IF your LaTeX skills are reasonably secure then this should be relatively straightforward. If you are still being challenged by LaTeX then now would be a great time to get it figured out.
This term there will generally (though not universally) be a FreeMat component embedded in each lab. As I have in the past I will generally provide a sample FreeMat file although if it is something we have done before I may assume that you need no assistance.
This lab does NOT count as one of your 5 accomplished labs.
Procedure:
There is a lot to do here depending on how experienced you are with software and programming. Here are the steps you are going to try to get through before next week. Installation instructions (very simplistic), tutorials, and files that you need can be accessed from the PH212 Software Resources page. In particular you will need COCCFiles.zip folder which contains all the various files and images you need to test this out.
1: Find a LaTeX file for a lab that you did last term that includes a plot and some math and is at least a page long. If you're new to the class or LaTeX you may use any paper that you did for a past class (math and one image would be helpful).
2: Copy the body of that lab (not the headers or the logo) into the body of this new lab report format. If you're new the the class just figure out how to put any text into the body of this LaTeX report. My concerns for new folks are just to get things going.
3: Write a short abstract of the lab/paper and insert it in the appropriate place in the LaTeX file
4: Change names, dates and other relevant personal information for the lab.
5: Add a section (this means something specific in LaTeX) and describe where this two column format is used in the science publishing world.
6: Alter the acknowledgement section to give a shout out to someone (could be parents or partner or even yourself) who has helped you make it this far in life and supports your academic efforts.
- Lab Deliverables:
- 1) All of the deliverables for this lab are described in the procedure above. Submit to Turnitin on Bb.
