Purpose:
- The purpose of this weeks lab is to get you looking ahead to your academic future. Based on past experience with students I find that many have not worked through the details of how they are going to complete their programs after transfer. I also find that while it seems obvious that much of the information is available on the Web it is often tremendously difficult to locate the relevant webpage. A collateral benefit of the lab is that I gain a clearer picture of you, the students I am attempting to serve. If you are not sure what your academic plans are then pick a reasonable possiblity and demonstrate that you can find this information if you need to.
Procedure:
-
Listen up and be curious!
1) Go to the COCC site or the home page for the institution you are planning to transfer to. If you are not sure of you plans pick a likely possibility and follow through the same exercise. When you do decide what your plans are you will at least have a model to follow. The sorts of questions you will be seeking answers to are:
- The home page for the school you plan to transfer to.
- The address of the page showing transfer requirements to this institution. How many credits can you transfer? Is there a list of transferable classes?
- The address of the page giving application deadlines for transfer. Can you get an application form off the Web? Can you get a college catalog off the Web?
- What are the general education requirements for graduation? Total credits, upper division credits, distribution or core classes, etc?
- The home page for the program you intend to pursue. Where will you be in your program when you transfer? Which specific classes do you need to take to be ready for junior level classes?
- Who would you call and how would you set up a meeting with an advisor or departmental representative if you wanted to get some advice? Can you get specific phone numbers or email addresses off the Web?
- Is there enough info on the Web sites to create a tentative schedule for your first quarter after you transfer? If so, where is it, and if not, what is missing?
- Most programs provide sample academic schedules to help guide you through the process. Can you find the academic map for your program? Do you know what all the classes are?
Here are some links to OIT programs in K Falls and Portland. You should also download the GPA tracking tool from this OSU webpage which is an Excel spreadsheet that calculates your pro school GPA for each engineering program. In addition this spreadsheet will tell you whether retaking any particular course will have a meaningful impact on your GPA.
LAB REPORT: Submit your Lab Report via Turnitin on Bb
Attached to the worksheet below I would like to hear your thoughts about the following:
I) Were you able to find the information you needed and was the site you were working from well organized from a student perspective? What is one thing you wish were different about the sites you visited? What is one thing that worked well for you in this search for information?
II) Create a timeline of the steps you need to complete in order to be ready for transfer or next year's coursework. Include application deadlines, financial aid deadlines, and courses to complete.
III) Tell me what you found most intriguing about the lab.
