If you find this before the first day of class than you may not have had recent experience with self evaluation. As I was thinking about what I hope you might learn from this third term of physics I realized that I wanted to start with some exercise that got you to think about your experiences in physics as well as what you feel are your strengths and weaknesses. The search for a tool to help guide this self evaluation led me to the Compass Project at UC Berkeley and the following posts about the development of self evaluation rubrics from the work of Jon Bender.

Here is a link to part 1 and part 2 (part 2 has inexplicably disappeared?) of this discussion:

In what ways did completing a self evaluation of your physics skills/experience change your thinking about this course?

Would it have been helpful to do this earlier in the course? Why?

Is there anything that, after reflection, you'd like to change about your responses to the self evaluation? The self evaluation rubric is linked at the bottom of this page if you want to do so:)

What does Jon assert are the 3 steps to a effective process of becoming a better learner? What is your plan at this point?

Where would you place yourself on a seven point scale from fixed mindset to growth mindset as articulated by Carol Dweck? [here's Carol's 10 min TED talk if you want to explore more deeply]

Did I share my self evaluation with you?
