Node Voltage

  1. On a clean sketch of the circuit choose which node you will use as the reference node. Draw the reference node symbol on the circuit. From here on out you are implicitly assuming that this point in the circuit is at 0 V
  2. Label all the remaining nodes with some set of "node voltages" usually v1, v2,....vn.
  3. Each node will generate one equation. Each dependent source will generate one additional equation. Each supernode (two nodes connected by a voltage source) will combine two node equations and add a supernode equation. Know what you got coming!!
  4. Circle any supernodes before starting node equations. Write node equations
  5. Write dependent source equation(s) -- i.e. express any dependencies in terms of your labelled node voltages
  6. Write any supernode equations by expressing the source voltage in terms of node voltages.
  7. Make any easy substitutions to reduce complexity of your system of equations and then solve.
  8. Check at least one node to make sure the currents add up
