Japan to Alaska by 16' Trimaran

Summer, 1999

Overview:

We plan to sail 16' WindRider Trimarans from Hokkaido, Japan, along the Kuril Islands, the Kamchatka Peninsula and eastern Siberia finally crossing the Northern Pacific at either the Bering Straits or the Aleutian Islands and ending our voyage in Alaska.

Our goals include both adventure and research. The small size of our craft requires that we beach nightly. This creates a regular opportunity to mingle with local peoples and to learn about their cultures and history.

Just as mountaineers look for remote unclimbed peaks and kayakers seek unrun rivers, sea kayakers search the globe for previously untraveled routes along exotic island chains or coastlines. Our 3,000 mile route will cross the North Pacific Ocean, from Japan to Alaska in 16 foot Trimarans. Extensive research reveals that this route has not been completed by a small craft. Long open water crossings, legendary fogs and an Arctic environment promises a significant challenge yet a classic adventure.
