Hybrid Battery Systems Badges:

At this point we are in the development stages for these badges. The purpose of these badges is to assert knowledge, skills, and compentencies in the domain of hybrid electric vehicles (HEV's). These badges will address specific subsets of the content of COCC's TED Automotive degree while at the same time bringing a higher level of documentation and expectation than the typical transcripted college credit.

Criteria for this Badge: Hybrid Battery Systems

Safety: Recipient will demonstrate knowledge of safety practices for removing/handling/installing HV battery systems. This skill set will be validated through testing as well as documented removal, testing, and installing of mulitple systems for each hybrid vehicle platform. 3 cycles of removal testing and installation required.

Evidence: Dates with instructor initials affirming the independent removal, testing, and reinstallation will be provided along with at least one documenting image.

Diagnostics: The recipient will demonstrate their ability to understand the normal operating parameters of the HEV Battery from two perspectives. The first is the use of the scan tool to assess the condition of the battery in the vehicle. The second is the use of the battery test platform (currently AR&D's system) to characterize battery performance more explicitly. 3 cycles of testing and diagnostic assessment required

Evidence: Scan data for the HEV battery will be recorded in a data sheet along with normal ranges and fault criteria without instructor input. Data sheet will be scanned and linked as evidence. Spread sheets from the battery test system will also be included along with an analysis of each of the critical aspects of the data from uniformity of response, individual and collective cell capacities, to charge/discharge curves.

Rebuild and Validate: The recipient will replace at least 20% of the cells in a failing battery pack, exercise the rebuilt battery according to current industry norms, and then validate the success of the rebuild through retesting of the battery pack. Embedded in this criterium are examples of each of the previous criteria. 1 complete cycle of rebuilding and validation.

Evidence: Complete documentation of the initial battery test indicating a need for cell replacement and 2 images of cell replacement process and map of cells ID's before and after the rebuild. A decription of the burn in process used after the rebuild and complete documentation of the post rebuild battery test.

The above criteria may be met by the student working in a supervised, but not guided, work environment. The expectation is that the student has demonstrated these skills independently using only typical references available on the shop floor.

Any of the evidence requirements may be modified by explicit written affirmation of the equivalent skill observed by the instructor. Such modifications must be attached to the evidence file.
