While there are a truly staggering number of blogs you can read about the potential uses and value of badges the resources to help you build your own badge from scratch are much less common. One might well ask "Why build a badge from scratch?". For me this is akin to asking why build a web page using HTML when WordPress and other tools are so available and effective. I would assert that in the early days of website development we all worked directly with HTML which helped us understand the potential of the tool and participate in it's growth. When the tools for developing and awarding open badges are more mature I suspect the same thing will happen for badges. I have found it helpful at this stage to directly experience the process of handbuilding a badge from the inside out.
